The notch on the iPhone X was contentious, but it’s a design that Apple has decided to stick with through the iPhone XS and, now, the iPhone 11. But word on the street is Apple plans on dropping the notch in 2020.
Here we are again with a new rumor, this time from Ben Geskin. He published a tweet on Thursday that not only offers a few key details, but also includes the image you can see at the top of this article. All eluding to an iPhone in 2020 that features no notch at all. The tweet from Geskin reads:
Exclusive: One of the 2020 iPhone prototypes has 6.7-inch display with Face ID and TrueDepth camera system housed in the top bezel.
You can see Geskin’s mockup of that said prototype in the image at the top of this article.
If this is indeed the case, it would mean Apple has figured out a way to get the TrueDepth camera system, and all of its intricacies, packed into the tiny bezel at the top of the phone. That would effectively remove the notch, but leave a noticeable bezel all around the display.
As long as Apple does indeed ditch the notch, that bezel probably won’t be a bad thing for iPhone owners.
Of course, as noted in the tweet from Geskin, this just suggests that Apple has prototyped this design. And while it does line up with a past report from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo that the company is planning to launch an iPhone with a 6.7-inch display in 2020, plans can change. It’s also worth noting that Kuo’s initial statement on new iPhones in 2020 did suggest a redesign of some kind, there was no specific details on whether or not Apple would be ditching the notch in the new design.
In related news, we heard earlier this week from the aforementioned Ming-Chi Kuo that Apple is planning on making another design change to the 2020 iPhone: a new metal frame that will be reminiscent of the iPhone 4’s design from years ago.
