Google yesterday announced that customers can now use its Maps app for mobile devices to easily pinpoint the locations of nearby electric vehicle (EV) charging stations on the map.
To find the nearest EV charging stations in your vicinity that are supported by the app (see below), use the in-app search feature with keywords like “ev charging” or “EV charging stations.”
The data displayed includes info about the business where the station is located, the types of ports available, charging speeds, how many ports there are and information about the station from drivers, such as photos, ratings, reviews and questions.
Global coverage starts with the following locations and EV charging station types:
- Global: Tesla and Chargepoint
- United States: SemaConnect, EVgo and Blink
- United Kingdom: Chargemaster and Pod Point
- Australia and New Zealand: Chargefox
Businesses with charging stations now display a relevant link on the map.
Google has said that the ability to search for EV charging stations on Maps began rolling out yesterday across the iOS and Android platforms. It being a staggered release, check back in a few days if this feature is not live for you yet. Support for finding EV charging stations will be added to the desktop edition of Google Maps in the coming weeks.
Apple began serving EV charging station information through its own Maps service in December 2016 with Apple Pay and ChargePoint support. In April 2017, ChargePoint EV charging station support expanded to the United Kingdom.
